Order certified copies of the death certificate

You'll need certified copies to close accounts, file insurance claims, transfer titles, and handle almost everything ahead. Ten to fifteen copies is a reasonable starting point for most estates. The funeral home usually handles the first batch of orders, so ask them when you call.

What you'll need

  • Their full legal name, date and place of birth, and Social Security number
  • Their parents' names
  • Proof of your relationship to them

Good to know

Order extras: Order more than you think you'll need. Going back later means another trip to the vital records office and a per-copy fee each time. Some banks accept digital scans, but many still require an original with a raised seal.
