The first days

Decide on burial, cremation, or another form of disposition

If they left instructions in a will or letter, follow those. If not, the family typically decides, sometimes guided by faith or personal preference. Burial and cremation are the most common, but green burial, aquamation, and body donation are also options. Costs vary widely.

What you'll need

  • Any written wishes or prearrangement paperwork

Good to know

Check the will first: Some states legally require the funeral home to follow any written wishes left by them, even if family disagrees. Ask the funeral director whether written instructions exist.
