Love Always

The first days

Find their military discharge papers

If they served, their DD-214 (discharge paper) is what unlocks military funeral honors, burial in a national cemetery, and VA benefits. Check their files and any safe deposit box. Many veterans also filed a copy with the county recorder. If you can't find it, next of kin can request a copy from the National Archives.

What you'll need

  • Their full name, date of birth, branch, and dates of service
  • A copy of the death certificate

Good to know

Ask the funeral home first: Many funeral directors request the DD-214 for families as part of arranging military honors
