File claims on any life insurance policies
Contact each insurance company with the death certificate and the policy number. Most claims pay out within a few weeks. Ask specifically about smaller policies they may have had through work, a union, a credit card, or a mortgage.

- Policy numbers
- A certified copy of the death certificate
- The beneficiary's ID
Good to know
Check for forgotten policies: Search their filing cabinet for old policies. Some people had life insurance through a former employer or bank they've since forgotten about. The MIB Group's policy locator service and unclaimed.orgcan help find lost policies.
