Apply for the Social Security lump-sum death benefit
A one-time $255 payment goes to a surviving spouse who lived with them, or to eligible children. It's small, but it's automatic if you apply. SSA can process the application over the phone.

- Their Social Security number
- Your marriage certificate or the children's birth certificates
