Request an EIN and open an estate bank account
The estate is a separate legal entity and needs its own tax ID (EIN) and bank account. You can get an EIN from the IRS website in about 15 minutes at no cost. The account collects any incoming payments and pays estate expenses.
What you'll need
- Letters Testamentary (your court appointment)
- A certified copy of the death certificate
- The EIN confirmation from the IRS
