The first weeks
Notify creditors and give them time to file claims
Most states require the executor to publish a notice to creditors in a local newspaper. Known creditors (mortgage, credit cards, medical bills) also get direct notice. Creditors then have a set window, usually a few months, to file claims against the estate.
What you'll need
- A list of known creditors
- Your court's notice requirements
Good to know
The creditor claim window only starts once notice goes out, and the estate can't be closed until it ends.
