The first weeks
Freeze credit with all three bureaus
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to freeze their credit. This prevents identity theft, which is common after a death because scammers use published obituaries. Each bureau has a specific process for reporting a death.
What you'll need
- A copy of the death certificate
- Their Social Security number
- Letters Testamentary (your court appointment)
Good to know
Send a copy, keep the original: Each bureau usually wants a copy of the death certificate. Don't send the only original you have. Order extras first (see Immediate Arrangements).
