Calls & paperwork
Banks, benefit programs, insurers, and others need to be told about the death, and some may owe the family money.
For now, here are a few things to keep in mind.
You don't have to call everyone at once.
- Death certificates come first. Most places ask for a certified copy. Most families need 10 to 15, and the funeral home usually orders them.
- One call to Social Security goes a long way. It reports the death and starts any benefits.
- Some money only arrives if someone claims it. Life insurance and retirement accounts pay the named beneficiary once a claim is filed.
- One list makes the rest easier. Keep every account, policy, and bill in one place as you go.
